Jay Hood ’86 was a 3-time honorable mention all-conference quarterback who broke most of the OWU career passing records. He became the starter in midseason of his freshman year and went on to rank eighth in the Ohio Athletic Conference in passing and total offense. An honorable mention All-OAC pick as a sophomore, he ranked third in the OAC in total offense and 10th in passing. He had his finest career outing vs. Denison that season: with the Bishops facing a fourth-and-10 at their own 16 with :49 to play, he completed 5 of 6 passes, including a 3-yard TD pass with :07 to play, and then a game-tying 2-point conversion pass. He completed 28 of 49 passes for 315 yards and 3 TDs that day. Against Wittenberg that season, he was 15-for-23 for 133 yards in the second half alone but OWU missed a game-winning field goal attempt with :08 to play in a 17-15 loss. His junior year, the Bishops switched to a veer option offense and split the quarterback duties among 2 players, but he still ranked third in the North Coast Athletic Conference in passing and fifth in total offense and was an honorable mention All-NCAC pick. His senior year, he ranked 10th in the NCAC passing and was an honorable mention All-NCAC pick. His totals of 425 completions, 856 attempts, 4469 yards, 51 interceptions, 1147 total plays and 4287 yards total offense all set OWU career records. He finished with 17 touchdown passes in his career.
