A 2-time all-region selection in soccer and a 2-time all-conference selection in basketball, Mindy Hammond ’03 was a key contributor to the Ohio Wesleyan women’s soccer team’s back-to-back national championships. She transferred to Ohio Wesleyan for her junior year and shared the starting goalkeeper spot, starting 13 of the 18 games in which she played. She led the North Coast Athletic Conference with a goals-allowed average of 0.29 and was a first-team All-NCAC, first-team All-Ohio, and first-team all-region selection. Ohio Wesleyan went 22-1-0, won the NCAC championship with an 8-0 record, and went on to win its first NCAA Division III championship. As a senior, she started all 23 games in which she played, helping Ohio Wesleyan to a 24-0 record, the NCAC championship, and the NCAA Division III championship. In a national quarterfinal game against St. Thomas, she converted the go-ahead penalty kick, then saved a St. Thomas penalty kick to move Ohio Wesleyan into the national semifinals. She had 10 shutouts and a goals-against average of 0.16, and did not allow a goal in 5 playoff games. The Bishops had 20 shutouts and allowed 4 goals all season. She was named Defensive Most Valuable Player at the national semifinals and was named to the all-tournament team. She was a second-team All-NCAC, first-team All-Ohio, and second-team all-region selection. She set an NCAA Division III playoff record for career goals-against average, and her 17 career shutouts ranked fifth on the OWU list. During her 2 seasons, Ohio Wesleyan was 46-1-0, 16-0 in the NCAC, and won 2 national championships. In basketball, she was a 2-time all-conference selection as a post player. Her junior year, she averaged 12.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game (11th, sixth, and second in the NCAC) and was an honorable mention All-NCAC selection. Ohio Wesleyan went 21-8, including a 13-3 league mark, won the NCAC tournament, and advanced to the sectional semifinals (final 16) of the NCAA Division III tournament. As a senior, she averaged 8.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game (third in the NCAC) and won second-team All-NCAC honors.
