John Gutknecht ’59 stood out as a cross country and track star. In cross country his first season, he won all 11 meets he was entered in. The same year, he finished second in the Ohio Athletic Conference meet and established 5 new records. During the 1957 season, Gutknecht won 8 consecutive races, including the OAC meet and the All-Ohio meet. Also during that season, he finished 11th in the NCAA cross country championship meet. He had another great cross country season in 1958, winning all 11 races and the OAC Meet, and placed second in the NCAA championship meet. In track, he was a champion in the indoor and outdoor 2-mile run. He broke 7 different records and was named an OAC champion on 6 different occasions.
