Katy Sturtz ’02 was a 4-time All-America selection in women’s soccer and a 2-time All-America pick in women’s basketball. In soccer, she led the nation in scoring as a freshman, compiling 43 goals and 9 assists for 95 points, and set an NCAA Division III playoff record with 4 goals in a 4-3 win over Olivet that was OWU’s first-ever NCAA victory. She was a first-team All-North Coast Athletic Conference, All-Ohio, all-region, and All-America selection and was named NCAC Player of the Year. As a sophomore, she led the NCAC and ranked seventh in the nation with 31 goals and 5 assists for 67 points. She repeated as a first-team All-NCAC, All-Ohio, all-region, and All-America selection and again was named NCAC Player of the Year. As a junior, she ranked second in the league in scoring with 17 goals and 5 assists for 39 points, and again repeated as a first-team All-NCAC, All-Ohio, all-region, and All-America selection. Her senior year, she led the league in scoring with 21 goals and 5 assists for 47 points and again repeated as a first-team All-NCAC, All-Ohio, all-region, and All-America selection, also taking her third NCAC Player of the Year citation. She caught fire in the NCAA playoffs, scoring twice against DePauw to set the Division III career goals record, then following with 2 goals against Albion to set the Division III career points record. She scored the game-winner against New Jersey in the quarterfinals, set up both goals in a semifinal win over Willamette, and scored the game-winner in the championship game against Amherst. During her career, she scored 112 goals (OWU and NCAC record) and had 24 assists for 248 points (OWU and NCAC record). Ohio Wesleyan was 76-9-1 (.889), including a 30-2 (.938) conference mark, with 3 conference titles, a national championship, and 2 quarterfinal appearances. In basketball, she averaged 16.2 points (fifth in NCAC) and 9.8 rebounds (fourth in NCAC) per game on the way to first-team All-NCAC honors as a freshman. Her sophomore year, she led the league in rebounding (10.9/game) and ranked third in scoring (15.5/game),and repeated as a first-team all-league pick. As a junior, she again led the league in rebounding (10.9/game), moved to second in scoring (17.2/game), and led the NCAC in field goal percentage and blocked shots on the way to first-team All-NCAC and NCAC Player of the Year honors. Ohio Wesleyan was 26-7, shared the NCAC title, won the NCAC tournament, and advanced to the national semifinals. She was named to all-tournament teams both at the sectional and national semifinals, and was a third-team All-America pick by d3hoops.com. Her senior year, she ranked sixth in the NCAC in scoring (15.3/game) and second in rebounding (9.2/game), repeated as a first-team All-NCAC pick and as NCAC Player of the Year. During her 4 years, the Bishops were 91-25 (.784), including a mark of 54-10 (.844) in the NCAC, with 3 conference championships, 3 NCAC tournament titles, and 3 NCAA playoff appearances, including a national semifinal appearance and 2 sectional semifinal appearances.
