Howard Stammler ’35 earned 3 letters in basketball and 2 in baseball. He was named to All-Buckeye teams his last 3 seasons. As a junior, he helped lead the Bishops to the conference championship and was the first recipient of the newly created Bun Trophy permanently awarded to the season’s Most Valuable Player. The Bishop guard made every postseason honorary team selected during the 1933-34 season. As captain during his senior year, Stammler led the Bishops to a second consecutive conference championship and an 18-2 season record. He also also named to the AP’s All-Ohio second team. As a baseballer, Stammler was a fine defensive shortstop, and a respected lead-off batter during his four years.
