Doug Schmidt ’59 started 29 consecutive games at quarterback and was one of Ohio Wesleyan’s first prolific passers. His senior year, he was an honorable mention All-Ohio pick by United Press International, a first-team All-Ohio Athletic Conference selection, and the team’s Most Valuable Player in addition to receiving honorable mention Williamson All-America and first-team Together Magazine All-America status. He ranked second in the OAC in passing, total offense, and punting; ranked second on the team in scoring; and led the team in punt returns. As a junior, he was named team MVP, ranked third in the OAC in passing, and set school and OAC records with 20 completions in 38 attempts against Denison. As a sophomore, he tied for second on the team in scoring and ranked fifth in the OAC in punting. Schmidt set Ohio Wesleyan career records for passing attempts, completions, and yardage, as well as total offense plays and yardage. He also was a 2-year starter and co-captain of the Bishop men’s lacrosse team.
