Tom Liller ’71 was an Academic All-America® selection in football who set Bishop game, season and career records for punt return yardage and the career mark for punt returns. He ranked second among Ohio Athletic Conference receivers with 44 receptions for 554 yards and 4 TDs as senior, also ranking sixth in the OAC in punt returns with a 9.4 average. He ranked third on the team with 15 receptions for 256 yards and 5 TDs as a junior, and returned 11 punts for 86 yards (7.8 avg). He shared punt return duties as sophomore, bringing back 14 for 182 yards (13.0 avg), including a school-record 108 yards vs. Oberlin, and caught 18 passes for 334 yards (18.6 avg). As a freshman, he shared punt return duties and totaled a Bishop-record 265 yards on 22 returns (11.0 avg) along with a team-high 10 kickoff returns for 204 yards. He returned a punt 25 yards to the Mount Union 15-yard line to set up the game-winning TD in a 24-21 win that helped the Bishops win the OAC championship. During his career, he returned 64 punts for 692 yards (10.8 avg) and caught 86 passes for 1342 yards (15.6 avg), and his 24 career TDs ranked fifth on the Bishop list. He also lettered once in track as a member of the 440 relay team that placed fourth at the OAC championship meet and third at the NCAA Mideast Regional meet his freshman year.
