Robert Davis ’59 was an outstanding track star. In his first season as a Bishop, he won the 440-yard dash 6 times and anchored the mile and 880 relay teams to consistent victories. He occasionally also came in first in the 220 yard dash. His sophomore year, he lowered Bishop records 7 different times. His best winning 440 time that year was :48.3, which was run during the Ohio Athletic Conference championship meet. During the 1958 season, Davis set 7 new records, won the 440 at the OAC championship meet and lead the relay teams to victories. During the outdoor season, Davis was only beaten once, that by Ohio State’s Glen Davis, who broke an 11-year-old NCAA record that day. During the 1959 season, Davis continued to excel, posting 6 first-place runs and multiple victories within the relay teams.
