George Gauthier arrived at Ohio Wesleyan in 1921 and served as football coach for 26 years and as athletics director at Ohio Wesleyan for 34 years. His football teams compiled a record of 121-98-14, won 5 conference titles, and posted wins over such gridiron powerhouses as Michigan and Michigan State. He also served as track & field coach until 1955, and was cross country coach until 1958, winning 10 conference titles and developing a pair of national champions. He was the motivating force behind the Buckeye Conference, in which Ohio Wesleyan competed from 1926-39. Gauthier designed and supervised the building of Selby Stadium and its track. He also founded the Ohio High School Relays meet.
