Gene Mehaffey coached men’s basketball for 20 seasons and men’s tennis for 19 seasons at Ohio Wesleyan. His basketball teams compiled a record of 283-247 and his tennis teams were 149-177. The pinnacle of his career came in the 1987-88 season, when the Bishop men’s basketball team captured Ohio Wesleyan’s first NCAA Division III national team championship in any sport. Mehaffey was recognized as the Division III and Ohio Coach of the Year, as well as NCAC Coach of the Year for the second time. He guided the Bishop men’s basketball team to 10 winning seasons in 20 years.
