Doug Cotterman ’61 was a record-setting thrower in track & field. He made an immediate impact in his first home indoor meet, throwing the shot 45 feet to break the school record. He made a similar impact in his first collegiate outdoor meet, throwing the discus 143-11 to break the OWU record by almost 6 feet. He won the discus with a throw of 150-4 3/8 at the Ohio Athletic Conference championship, breaking the old conference record by nearly 2 feet, as OWU won its fourth straight OAC title. As a sophomore, he threw the discus 155-1 in the OAC championship to finish second and was second in the shot and tied for fifth in the pole vault. As a senior, he set an indoor Bishop record of 49-2½ in the shot put and later extended that mark to 49-9¾ in winning the shot put title at the OAC meet. Outdoors, he was unbeaten in the shot put and discus during the regular season before throwing the shot an OAC-record 50-3½ in the conference meet, becoming the first Ohio Wesleyan competitor to top 50 feet.
